Mitcham Common comprises 182 hectares of land which was, in medieval times, used by locals to graze animals and cut turf and timber for fuel. In the19th century, gravel was excavated here, providing material for road building. Seven Islands Pond is the largest relic of this era in the common’s history.

There is a variety of different habitats, home to many species of wildflowers and animals, providing a beautiful distraction from busy urban life.

To conserve this natural resource, the common is regulated and administered by the Mitcham Common Conservators, with the London Borough of Merton implementing the policies agreed by the board.

In addition, the Friends of Mitcham Common provide support to the conservators and develop interest from the local people concerned with the wildlife, habitat and amenity value of the area.
